The measures of success

By Fr. Tristan Jasper D. Laforteza

People have different definitions of success. To some it may mean having a lot of money, popularity or fame, while with others it may mean finding your lifetime partner or finding happiness and enjoying life to the fullest or being able to do what you want when you want it. It all comes down to how you were brought up, what your past circumstances were and the kind of mindset you were able to adapt during those times that were able to come up with a measure of success. But one thing is for certain, you can never be successful at anything if you don’t love what you’re doing. Do you believe this?

In order to be truly successful in life, then you must love what you do, if you love what you’re doing, then success will follow. Here are some things you can do:

Step #1 FOLLOW YOUR PASSION. It may sound like a cliché of the surefire ways to become truly successful in life is to follow your passion. If you want to love what you do and find success, then follow your passion. Most people would rather choose “job security” than doing what they love since they believe that there is no money pursuing their passions. They can be wrong because you’ll never know until you try it. If you follow your passion, then you’ll love what you are doing. You will be happier and can do the work better than if when you are stuck and just forced to complete the work. What does success mean to you? What is your passion?

Step #2 ESTABLISH YOUR PLANS. There is a Chinese proverb that says, ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.’ Maybe if you already know what you want to do, then that’s an advantage. Some people spend a lifetime looking for what they are passionate about. The next step is to take it. If you’re afraid to quit your job then dabble in your passion until it becomes good enough to take the place of your 8-5pm job. You will be happier this way. Do you allow people to dictate what being successful means? What are the good plans you need to establish now?

Step #3 CHANGE YOUR MINDSET. Maybe you’ve already heard of it, a positive mind will yield positive results and a negative mind will yield negative results. Remember, if you believe you can do it, you are right, now, if you believe you can’t do it, you are right as well. So, learn to believe in yourself and believe that doing what you love will yield the success you are looking for. Do you stay in a job you don’t like just because you think it’s for the best?

Whenever doubt plagues me, I always turn to God’s promises. I always come back to what the Lord said in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I know He has a great plan for me and that He will prosper everything that I do if it is aligned to His Will. I remember my friend who used to work for a company in Makati. She had to wake up so early to beat the traffic. She eventually became what you would call a mediocre worker, though she was a painter at heart. So when she decided to quit her job and pursue painting, she has found success selling her paintings online and finding clients who commissions her for work. She is much happier now than when she was a corporate slave.

Dale Carnegie once said, “Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you will find the happiness that you had thought could never be yours.”

Now, go out and do it!
