Pinoy young blood at the US Coast Guard Academy

New London, CT. Most of us are familiar with Filipino exchange cadets sent to the US Military Academy (USMA) or more popularly known as Westpoint in New York, the US Naval Academy in Maryland, and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado. But do you know that the US Government also offers scholarships for the US Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, Connecticut?
Every year, the US Government, through the bilateral cooperation with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) administers college scholarship grants to qualified Filipino young people between the ages of 17 to 20. Up to six (6) slots are up for grabs from the students of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) and applicants from civilian colleges and universities.
This 2019 Parents’ Weekend, a group of public safety officials doing their Senior Executive Course in the US, visited USCGA. They were received with the snappiest welcome and given a tour of the school’s facilities to include Chase Hall, the sleeping quarters, classrooms and sports facilities. Said officials cannot help but compare USCGA with their alma mater, the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) in Silang, Cavite. [They were so enthused that when they got to New York, they went to visit USMA. They concluded that the US government really invests not only on their current peace and security, but its future security as well.
