Last week Lucky Chances Casino celebrated its 20th Anniversary. The event was attended by Colma officials: Mayor Racquel Rae Gonzales, Vice-Mayor Joan del Rosario, Councilmember Helen Fisicaro and Diana Colvin.
They had these to say:
Colma Mayor Racquel Rae Gonzales
“On behalf of our town council, we’re very proud and very happy to have this 20th year celebration. Lucky Chances has been very supportive and collaborative. We’re very happy to have them in our community. I wish them another 20 years of celebration”
Vice-mayor Joan del Rosario
“It’s an honor for us to be here tonight to congratulate Lucky Chances on their 20th anniversary. It’s such a great honor and we applaud them for being here in this community for this long. And their extreme generosity to all the residents and even to the neighboring community.”
The 60-table cardroom opened its doors to the public on June 28,1998. Its friendly staff of over 650 employees can serve all gaming needs.
Merle Tobias worked as Assistant cook in the pantry since day one. She thanked the Medina family and mentioned that she was able to put her children through school by working at Rene’s Fine dining. “ I love them very much,” she added.
Here’s what other grateful
Bernie Nevarez, Lead Security Officer
“I have been with the company for 20 years and I love working here. Everybody here is like family so I love coming here every day to work because it feels like a second home. I started as (security) officer and I got promoted to supervisor. So, that was my biggest accomplishment here. I’ve been a supervisor for like, 18 years now. This company treats you like family. I mean, there’s a lot of ethnicities and different cultures, and I’ve learned a lot by just talking to people. I make customers feel welcome and comfortable, so they’ll want to play here and come back.
Jackie Luu, Asian Games Operation Coordinator
“In the beginning it was just a job I and then I realized I love this place so much because Mr. Medina’s family really provides a fun and safe work environment, that’s why it’s become a career for me and I have passion to come to work every day. I could work here for so long.”
Arlene Lacsamana, card dealer
“I’ve been here since June 15, 1998, so 20 years exactly. I started as chip runner and got promoted. It’s a good company I love them, they’re like family. I’ve lasted this long because of the people I work with – they’re number one and number two — the money is okay, ha-ha. I love what I do now, I am most excited making people win. Everything is good. I have no complaint and people here are great. I grew up with them.”
Edward Lee, Food and Beverage Manager
“I’ve been here since the opening. 1998. I got promoted to food and beverage manager by Mr. medina at the start. The owners they are very nice and take good care of everybody. We all do team work.”.
Dustin Chase, General Manager
“The business has really evolved — California card room industry. When we first opened we had poker games and a few, what we call Asians style games like double hand pai gow. Now we offer games like 3-card poker, ultimate Texas hold ‘em, baccarat. Our biggest accomplishment is really staying relevant in the industry and remaining the premiere place for Northern California for our players. I started as a poker shift supervisor and now I’m the general manager. I have to say working for the Medina family has been very rewarding, they are very supportive of their employees. It’s the first time that I’ve been able to commit myself to a career and 20 years has gone by so fast. Well, I hope we have big things in store for us in 20 years. The industry is constantly evolving, we have a lot of competition, we have some detractors but I envision we will have the ability to expand games that we have and I think, with technology, things will look different 20 years from now.”
