SAN JOSE – Mayor Sam Liccardo recently nominated Councilmember Chappie Jones to serve as San José’s next Vice-mayor.
“Throughout his tenure, Chappie has brought a thoughtful and independent perspective to this Council,” said Liccardo. “He’s also a natural collaborator who seeks to understand all sides of an issue and is well-respected by stakeholders across the political spectrum.”
“I greatly admire and fully share the progressive vision the Mayor has for San Jose,” said Councilmember Jones. “I have worked diligently to establish an inclusive and innovative future for our city and will continue to advocate on behalf of its residents. I am humbled and proud to be given this new opportunity to continue to serve the City of San Jose and its extraordinary residents.”
Councilmember Charles “Chappie” Jones was elected to the San José City Council in November and started his second term January 2019. He represents City Council District 1 and also serves on the VTA Board of Directors. Chappie was born in Sacramento and moved to San José in the 1990s. His upbringing created a strong sense of civic responsibility. He is a tenacious advocate of civil service, fiscal responsibility, and community engagement. Chappie has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of California, Davis and a Masters of Business Administration from the prestigious Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. Chappie has been married for over 20 years to Kelli Jones, a high tech sales and marketing consultant. Together they have two children and live in the Murdock neighborhood of District 1.
The Vice Mayor is charged with chairing City Council meetings and performing other duties when the Mayor is absent.
In making his nomination, the Mayor noted that he wanted to provide the opportunity for another member of the City Council to serve as Vice-mayor, while also praising current Vice- mayor Magdalena Carrasco for her exemplary service and partnership over the past two years.
“Magdalena has done a great job as vice-mayor and I’m particularly thankful for her willingness to pitch in over the past week as I recover from my accident,” said Liccardo. “She has been a great partner and I look forward to continue working with her to broaden prosperity and educational opportunity in our city.”
