Liberal Party President Sen. Francis Pangilinan said in a Zoom interview Vice-president Leni Robredo is among those being eyed as the party’s standard bearer in the coming 2022 presidential elections.
As the highest elected official in the party, Pangilinan said Robredo serves as LP’s chairperson.
But he also said they have yet to discuss who will be LP’s presidential candidate.
“She has no decision yet. There’s still a lot that can happen but in the meantime we just focus on how we can help address this pandemic and the economic crisis,” said Pangilinan.
“I understand there are some groups already discussing 2022, that’s OK. Let them start. For us, I think ultimately, 2022 is really all about voters, so for us in the Liberal Party, we just continue our recruitment in the grassroots, help in our community to survive this Covid pandemic,” he also said.
For her part, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said she would run for president in 2022 if the opposition would also support her candidacy and help her win the election.
“A President has only six years to help. I can’t do the job well if we will not unite,” said the President’s daughter.
“If we want to lift our fellowmen out of poverty, we need all hands on deck working hard and not spend the next six years wringing each other’s necks,” she added.
Mayor Duterte also responded to the “Run, Sara, Run” activities that took place last February 6.
“I understand where they are coming from, I too am anxious where we are going as a nation. I am always grateful that I have their trust and confidence. I am pleading to them to please allow me to run for President on 2024, if at that time there is something I can do to help the country,” she also said.
Meanwhile, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go said, “Don’t include me when it comes to talks about the elections.”
“It is important for us to address this pandemic first, because if we don’t, then we may not have an election to talk about.”
In a Pulse Asia survey released in December 2020, Go was among those named as possible contenders for the 2022 presidential race. The leading contender was Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
This is not the first time Go denied that he was running for higher office in the next elections. In February 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte said Go may be aiming to be the next president.
