This year 14 students and a resident of Colma received scholarship grants during the Colma town council meeting last May 11 at Colma Community Center. This is the 16th Colma Citizens awarding ceremony. It was started in 2000 by Lucky Chances Casino and is fully funded by the company, as well. Previously directed by Rene Medina and now his son Rommel, Lucky Chances has been very supportive to the Colma community. Between 2000-2015 Lucky Chances distributed $274,193.00. This year, an additional $12,750.00 is being awarded. The Scholarship Fund Committee consists of seven members: five Colma citizens-at-large and two Lucky Chances employees. The scholars for 2016-2017 are: Marco Andres Montalvo, Micah de la Cruz, Sarah Yoa, Sean Patrick Goodwin, Ben Angelo Pacis, Carmela Roque, Nigel Parangan, Adam Cook, OliverMangibin, Jovana Toscano, Luke Lenard Lazaro, Nathaniel Liston, May Decosta and Bianca Ruby Gonzales.
First time scholar Luke Lazaro studied at Skyline College, taking up Computer Engineering. He wants to continue his studies at UC Berkeley so he can create programs to help children integrate with the technology world. He thanked Rommel Medina for helping him to reach his dream. “This scholarship is very important to me. This helps me pay my tuition fee next semester.” he added.
Nathaniel Liston, also a first time scholar, told to FilAm Star, “Being a barber is my dream, the tuition fee is very expensive and this scholarship is a very big help.” He also mentioned that his dream is to have a barber shop and help the community, as well as the homeless by giving them free haircut.
