The battle of Manila Bay more accurately told
Street Talk
By GREG B. MACABENTA
As a former Tagalog movie screenplay writer, the one film I wish I could have written is The Battle of Manila Bay, presented a-la Rashomon, that classic Japanese motion picture about a killing, recounted from different perspectives.
The Battle of Manila Bay has mainly been told from the US perspective (which is understandable because history is usually told from the point of view of the victors). My dream film would attempt to correct...

Born to a Filipino father and Italian mother, 56 years old Cesar Altieri Sayoc, Jr. grew up with hardly a memory of his father since his father abandoned him as a child. With no father to look up to, Sayoc searched the wilderness for a father figure.
According to Ancestry.com, Sayoc’s father, who spelled his name Ceasar Sayoc, was born in 1932 in Manila, Philippines. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 under the Luce-Celler Act of 1946. He live...

By Lara Climaco i FilAm Star Correspondent
In a move that could further delay the bidding for the country’s third telco slot, two lawyers based in Manila have asked the Supreme Court (SC) to stop the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) from bidding out frequencies associated with the PHP 7 billion buyout by the PLDT Group and Globe Telecom of the telco assets of San Miguel Corp (SMC).
The 49-page petition was filed October 23 by lawyers Joseph Lemuel Baligod Ba...
New law broadens hazing; 16 proposed new age of consent
By Macon Araneta i FilAm Star Correspondent
The recent reports of Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) freshmen forced to perform oral sex as punishment would be a test case for Republic Act 11053, the new Anti-Hazing Act of 2018, said Sen. Panfilo Lacson.
“In this case, the cadets involved may have the (dubious) distinction of being the first to be convicted under the new law,” said Lacson.
He stressed hazing is now considered a capital offense, with those foun...

By Daniel Llanto i FilAm Star Correspondent
After congressional hearings more or less established that a second shipment of multi-billion-peso worth of shabu (crystal meth) slipped through the ports under the very noses of Customs officials, President Duterte has ordered the military to take over operations at the Bureau of Customs (BoC).
The executive action alarmed administration critics and opposition leaders as “unconstitutional and dictatorial,” although Malacañang...

Duterte issues shoot-to-kill order vs. group occupying land not their own
By Daniel Llanto i FilAm Star Correspondent
“My order to the police and the soldiers is to shoot them and I don’t care if they die,” President Duterte said, referring to any group of poor people occupying private lands not their own, as well as idle housing units not built for their use.
The casus belli of the President’s order was apparently the October 20 incident in Sagay, Negros Occidental, where nine sugar workers were killed while on a “bungkalan” or land cultivat...
